Fabric shades have always been popular window treatments. We have seen more interest in the use of shades the past few years. Our clients prefer fabric shades (Flat Roman, Water fall Roman, Hobbled Roman, Balloon shades, Austrian shades, …. etc.) because they look neat, they provide a valance look when they are lifted up, they insulate–especially when interlined–they provide full privacy when pulled down, they can have the top down feature, and now they can be ordered cordless for child and pet safety.
Our client from Burr Ridge, Dupage county, Illinois, loved the look of Balloon valances and Roman shades. Well, she got them both in this fabulous window covering

An Installation took place last week in Burr Ridge IL. The room was medium sized and well lit, however the furniture was a little over sized and too many pieces were used. That made the room seem even smaller. Here is how the windows were dressed to help the room appear bigger, and more spacious: the walls were painted in a warm, light taupe, and the treatment was kept simple. We raised the panels as far as possible, keeping the proportions in mind, and the color of the drapery fabric was the same color as the walls, lowering the contrast. Both of these things delude the eyes into thinking the room is larger than it is.

The client expressed interest in ripple fold draperies in place of sheers and blinds for privacy, and she wanted to create the feel of a five star hotel. I believe, she got it!
Whenever we finish an installation, I see the excitement of my clients. They are so excited and over joyed with their new treatment!
Draperies, blinds, shades and shutters, like any furniture in your home, will accumulate dust, and that will take away from their beauty and elegance. Here are some tips to help keep your window treatments looking as fresh as the day they were installed:
Feather dust, or use an unscented dryer sheet to dust them on a weekly basis just like you do with furniture.
You can vacuum if your vacuum has a low setting.Oonly use the hose to gently remove dust from the surface.
Compressed air can be used as well. Office Max, or any other office supply store carries the compressed air cans for cleaning electronic devices and computers. The compressed air is ideal for cleaning cellular shades, silhouettes and shades of that nature.
Dry cleaning: We recommend dry cleaning every 10 years. If the home owner is a smoker, or heavy cooking is performed close to the drapery area, I would recommend dry cleaning every 5-7 years.
Ultrasonic cleaning on site is ideal to keep your beautiful custom window covering looking fresh and as gorgeous as the day they were installed.
When my client from Naperville, IL (Dupage county) called me to redo her living and dinning areas, I was excited, motivated, and pumped up with energy!
I arrived to her place, a beautiful home with large windows, lots of sun and space, we sat down to discuss her needs and her vision of what she wanted the spaces to look like when we finish the project.
She wanted roman shades with stationary side panels for the windows, fresh paint, a new sofa, a rug, the reupholstering of two chairs and accessories!
When we talked about budget, we came up with a plan! We can do it in stages, and we can save by going on a treasure hunt right at her own home! You will be surprised at how many items you can find that can be reused, refurbished, and with a magical new face lift can be transformed into a brand new piece. I was especially excited to see a curio cabinet over stuffed with items. These very special items can be used as accessories here and there, which means reduction in our unnecessary spending on decorative items. The main budget can be used on the windows and new a couch.
A collection of china cups and saucers were buried under other items and they were well hidden in the curio cabinet! A flow of ideas came to my mind: why can’t we use them as our decorative items around the two rooms? My client welcomed the idea, and I had my wonderful handyman make me tiny shelves, then paint them, hang them on the wall in a special composition to have balance, and voila! The new look was fresh, unique, and economical!

In my opinion what makes a valance, or any window treatment is the bells and whistles you add. When I say bells and whistles, it is not necessarily has to have fringes, trims, and embellishments, it could be adding an unusual pleat, buttons, contrast cording, grommets or the way you lay your fabric. Cutting your fabric on the bias, especially if the fabric has a special design, such as checks, or a geometrical pattern effects the look of the valence. How about alternating the pattern, perhaps having the face of the valance be normally cut and inserting the pleat that has been cut on the bias? Take a look at the pictures below.
I find myself drawn to Barbara Barry’s designs and philosophy. She believes in transforming peoples lives through design. Her soft palettes, mostly taken from nature, with clean lines, and minimum use of patterns allow us as humans, she believes, to create our own patterns in the room. All that makes her designs so perfect for city dwellers, as well as suburban living.
The environment that we live in has an impact on how we feel, and strongly affects our well-being. Therefore having a well designed space that reflects our style, with the colors patterns, textures that make us make us feel good, safe, happy, and contented, is very important, and that is my job! I often feel that I am the therapist for your home. I help my clients to improve their spaces, whether it is by rearranging the furniture, adding a few pillows or decorative accessories, repainting, or adding new window covering. A simple make over or a major one, we assist in the project from start to end.

What was the client’s desire for this beautiful dining room?
I get a call from this wonderful client that I met in the mid nineties and been working with her since then. Her house located in Naperville, Dupage county Illinois, saw three different changes since then. She likes to update her house with new designs about every five to six years, and she gets so much joy each time with the transformation.
This time it is her dining room, her dream is to have a dining room that she could use every now and then for her, her husband, and the children when they come for visit.
She wanted a dining room that is formal enough for guests, yet it is user friendly for every day use.
She loves painted furniture, therefore we had her oak colonial dining table to be faux painted and distressed with several layers of paint to give depth to the piece in addition adding distressing where it looked natural from wear and tear of years of use. Her draperies came out looking stunning! We have selected together a cotton fabric printed with fruits and a color scheme that works with the rest of the house. The fabric was a classic, though what made the draperies so special are the banding on the leading edges of each panel, a solid yellow cotton was selected that worked amazingly well with the main body of the drapery, the faux finished table and the wall paint.
Grommets were inserted along the length of the panels, right on the banding and a braid fringe was threaded through the grommets! We both were so impressed by that look and felt very proud! Now that what we call ( THE WOW FACTOR)!
