The Illuminated Room! Burr Ridge IL

The Illuminated Room

A new client in Burr Ridge, Illinois, asked me to design his living room and said he wanted a unique design. He further said he wanted me to create “the WOW! factor” with a design that I’ve never done for another client.

An exciting challenge for a designer, right? Well, after giving it some thought, I decided to create “sculptural” window treatments for the five windows in the room.

The room has a curved wall with a faux finish with honey, gold, gray and a hint of golden green. That was my base for a color scheme.

We selected furniture with contemporary styling, in black and gray with a hint of rust/copper. The coffee table was very interesting! It’s oval-shaped and finished in copper, resembling a smooth pebble.

Deep thought was given to the design of the five tall, slender all windows. I needed to create a design to enhance the overall look of the room and the play up the height of the windows.

I found this amazing fabric that was perfect in terms of colors and texture. The background was in blackened, antiqued silver with woven lines of copper that stretched up and down across the length of the fabric. Perfect choice! I also found an amazing trim with diamond stones woven in rows across the band, which added amazing elegance and style.

So, I thought to myself, “Why not create curved cornices to echo the curved wall?” I imagined covering the cornices with that perfect metallic fabric and using the diamond-covered trim as a decorative element to add sparkle and draw the eyes up to enhance the height. Another thought: “Why not install  LED lights within the cornices to illuminate the ceiling, and install drapery sheers under the cornices?”

Voila! Unique idea, I hadn’t done this before, and I was positive that my client would love it!

As expected, the client approved. Construction and installation took 12 weeks, a little longer than average; the delay was because I had to find the perfect electrician to make my design come to life.

I found the perfect light fixture for the narrow wall that one sees when entering the room. It looks Like a shield with the light right in the center. A unique choice for a unique room! The room is not quite complete. We need an area rug, side tables, and accessories. I will post photos of the room when we have selected the right elements to complete the look. The following photos show the room as it is now:

Window Covering is more than just a window covering!

Seems like ages ago when what you hung up in front of your windows were simple curtains. Over the years though, so many incredible designs, styles, fabrics,  technology and innovations have turned “curtains” into the most elegant and personal statement you can make when it comes to home decor. With options like creative valances, sumptuous cornice designs, acres of fabric, gorgeous ornamentation, hardware or tassels, and the look and feel becomes pure luxury. The key is finding and selecting the perfect fabric to achieve your design goal.

Casual elegance can be achieved with textured fabrics. Shimmering silks, blends and new synthetics can bring an elegance that makes your rooms shine. Multi-layered effects help achieve depth at any window. Add fabric sheers, shadings, and blinds beneath custom-designed draperies and you’ll be making the ultimate décor statement.

Selecting the proper window coverings can be a daunting task. There are a lot of things that need to be considered; the architecture of the window, the style of the room, privacy, sun control, fabric type, function, and hardware. There are many options available on the market today and window coverings have never been more important and cost-effective.

Window coverings can provide energy efficiency in a home as well as privacy and security. They can protect your furniture, flooring, and artwork from the damaging rays of the dun. The cellular shade provides full privacy, blocks harmful UV rays, and softly filters in light for a beautiful effect. And the best part is that it comes at an affordable price.

The honeycomb construction of this blind allows heat to be trapped in its core keeping your room cooler in the summer and improving the efficiency of your air conditioner. In the winter, this blind traps the drafts, preventing the cold air from entering the room.

Window coverings take your décor to a new level. A naked window at night becomes a big black hole and can make a room feel cold and empty. Fabric on the window is an easy  add on, an interesting way to introduce pattern, color, texture, interest, balance, and beauty to a room’s décor.

Often clients say that they don’t want to cover their windows because they enjoy their view. Privacy and sun control aside, a simple, well designed window covering will actually frame the view, enhancing it while providing a certain look and coziness to the room. In my opinion, no window should ever be bare.

Burr Ridge living room gets a new drapery treatment.

A new drapery design was created for a traditional living room in Burr Ridge Illinois. The inspiration was a tapestry fabric from the Kravet collection, that was the base for the design. The treatment consists of an arched cornice covered in stripe silk fabric, and embellished with a bead fringe from Brimar.

The side panels are hung from above the cornice to create height since we had only an eight foot ceiling.

The side panels are pulled to the sides to add drama and opulence!

Drapery details is what make them stand out!

We have heard it a million times before, and I am going to say it again: When it comes to design, it is all about the details. Take a look at the balloon valance below. The fabric is a beautifully, smooth silk that matches the roman shade. We added a ripe mango colored silk as a ruffle, then inserted a bustling fringe between that ruffle and the valance body. Don’t you think the results here are elegant and sophisticated?

Silk Valance gets beadazzled!

Silk Valance gets(Bedazzled)!

I was hired to design a valance for a master bath. We were looking for fabrics that has shimmer, sparkle, and (bling)! We found this gorgeous silk fabric with rhinestones attached to the fabric. The dilemma was the cost per yard for that fabric was over $350.00 per yard! This was totally out of budget.

Here what we did:

Found moderately priced dupioni silk, we stapled on the edges rhinestones with a bedazzle gun , and Viola!!!

A beautiful valance that is unique, we have achieved our goal, and most importantly the client is tickled pink!

Drapery window treatment for a Burr Ridge Home!

The client request for this beautiful dining room was to keep the window as open as possible to let the light in, and to have long drapery panels on each side of the bay window. The home is traditional with many neoclassic features, therefore, the design of the draperies has to compliment the architecture, as well as enhance the window it self.

Here was our approach:

  • Have silk drapery panels at each corner of the bay, the panels are shirred tight to keep them slim in order to allow the light in and not to block the window.
  • The embroidered fabric used for the swags has tied in the colors of the upholstery on the chairs with the drapery panels.
  • The swags with it’s fringe, the drapery panels and they way they break on the floor, it supports the neoclassic ambiance.
