Creative cornice window treatment

A custom cornice was designed for a young artist! She is very creative, artistic not only in painting, she is an amazing dancer, she loves animals, and she has a collection of masks displayed on the wall that represents Central America’s culture.

The room was painted in deep blue, and the room backs to a yard with many trees.

Here was the challenge: The room is dark and has no definition, and the design has to appeal to my young client to reflect her artistic personality, her love of animals and birds, and her love of the culture of Central America.

The design included a cornice that was made from three sections, the sides on the left and write projected a bit forward, more than the middle section that almost resembled two columns.

A light blue fabric was used for the cornice to create a definition to the window, the two sides were embellished with real feathers that were inserted in the center. The color of the feathers was deep red that popped out to draw the attention and a printed linen panels were installed under the side cornices to provide further definition to the window. The fabric was printed with feathers in different sizes and various colors of blues and aqua. The finished product was unique in design and material selection. Our young artist was very happy. I am sharing what testimonial I have received from her mom.

Her mom wrote a testimonial on Houzz:

I asked Susan to create a window treatment for my teenage daughter’s bonus room. The room lacked direction and theme. Susan took the time to really get to know my daughter and interviewed her to get a sense of her interests and desires. My daughter’s love of animals and art inspired
Susan to create a window treatment that is an art piece in itself. She incorporated beautiful feathers on a 3D valence! This room was once without direction, but now is personalized and inspirational- exactly what my daughter wanted. Thank you Susan!

New Draperies for a Burr Ridge Client!

We finished installing new draperies for one of our clients in Burr Ridge Illinois!

These were the clients requirements:

  • Allow as much light as possible to come in the room.
  • Unique draperies that will make a statement.
  • The draperies must have a masculine feel.
  • The draperies must blend and coordinate with the furnishings that exists already in the room.

How did we meet the clients requirements?

  • We created panels that are stationary and will cover small part of the window only.
  • The design, the combination of fabrics and the use of the hardware is very unique.
  • By using faux leather, velvet, nail heads in the cornice and how they all were put together, made the treatment have a masculine feel.
  • The room was painted a very beautiful, warm golden yellow, the furniture had brown, gold and salmon pink as far as colors. The chairs were over sized with nail heads as a detail. Our treatment had the same colors, had a nice combination of textures, and the way it worked together it was amazing! When our client walked in the room that is what she said : ” you are an artist!”

Cornices, they provide a seal against heat loss!

Studies has shown that about 40% of the heat in a space can be lost through windows that are uncovered or poorly covered!

Therefore, planning the design of the window treatment carefully is a key for reducing heat loss and having an energy efficient home.

Cornices are ideal to seal the top of the window and prevent cold air from coming into  a space.

Cornices can look stylish, very elegant and have a modernized look that can go well with any Decor.

Below are pictures of custom cornices designed for a client in Westmont Illinois, with draperies, for maximum energy efficiency.

August is back to school month! Is your child’s room to help him or her excel in the next school year?

Studies have shown that children will do better with their homework and school in general if their rooms are well-designed and organized.

Here are some guide lines to help get your children’s rooms ready for the new school year:

  • Get them involved! Ask what type of theme they would like to create: sports, music, safari, or perhaps a very slick contemporary theme.
  • Have them select the paint color they like best. You might want to go online to www.voiceofcolor.com  and click on the color sense game to discover what your child’s best color combination is and color personality.
  • Make sure the room is organized and clutter free. The more order and less distraction there is, the better the child’s ability to focus. Create an area for studying: a clutter free desk with drawers and a place for all the knick knacks is essential.
  • You need to consider whether the child is left-brained or right-brained. When the child is creative and visual, he or she might need things out and not hidden. On the other hand, some children are more left brained and will function better when their items are kept out of sight. If the child prefers his or her items exposed and not hidden, then creating a system for storage is important. Perhaps color coding will work well to keep things organized. Teaching them to file and not to pile is always a good habit for their future.
  • Create an area to hang out with friends, another area for leisure reading, a dressing area, and so on. If you need a professional organizer, Mrs. Kim Cosentino, of De-Clutter Box, has helped many people in the western suburbs get their homes and places of work organized. To learn more about her services visit www.declutterbox.com or you can call her at (630) 968-7557.
  • The desk must be well lit to reduce the strain on the eyes.
  • The window treatments in the child room will have multi functions as well as esthetics. Room darkening shades or draperies are one way to ensure that your child is getting a good night’s sleep. Also you might want to reduce the noise of the outside world, especially if you live on a busy street. In this case, interlined draperies will cut the noise somewhat.
  • Investing in a good bed is always a good idea. It is amazing the kind of effect a good mattress can have on your child’s energy level for the next day. How about nice bedding that coordinate with the design theme?

Children’s rooms should be functional and organized, as well as fun and well-designed. This is the best gift you can give your child to tell them how much you love them and that you care. With a room that they love, children will be rejuvenated for the new year and motivated to do well with their school work. It can be as easy as some fresh paint, decorative pillows and new bedding to turn the end-of-summer blues into fun and productive fall. Your child will appreciate the new décor and enjoy it for many years to come.

Creating tranquility and comfort in a hotel room!

Recently I had the chance to stay at freshly remodeled Hampton motel in Seattle, Washington. The new design was very well put together and that really effected how I felt during my stay. There was an effort to create that feel of home, relaxing, restful environment.

The most comfortable bed dressed in all white soft linen, made me want to dive right into it!!! The duvet was so downy and soft, bunch of feathery, slouchy pillows, which made me want to stay in bed for that unsurpassed pampering!

Of course I paid close attention to the window treatment. The first layer was a screen shade which totally loved because it defused the bright light and gave the room  some privacy and one still could see out. The second layer was draperies with black out lining for total room darkening. Stationary panels in a large print framed the window on each side and a tailored cornice finished the window.

Although there was nothing out of the ordinary about the room but how it was put together, the colors, patterns, and the effort to create comfort, restful feeling, and serenity what made me feel down at home, and I couldn’t help feeling impressed!!!
