Drapery Trends: Panels Are Perfect In So Many Places

In recent years, we’ve seen increasing use of drapery panels as window treatments, replacing swag treatments or valances in popularity.

Most drapery panels are used to add warmth to a room. Most are stationary panels that also serve as something of a palette, letting people add patterns, textures, and colors to their rooms to create their own special look.

Simplicity is the trend in drapery panel design. The eye-catching details are in the fabric itself, or in the pleating – or perhaps decorative hardware is the design element that adds the “wow” factor to the window treatment. The design itself is clean and simple; it’s the extras that express creativity and individual style.

Drapery panels in urban homes are almost always stationary, and they’re often combined with shades or blinds for privacy. The pleating styles most frequently used include French pleats (sometimes called tacked-top pleats), or two-finger pleats, which is my personal preference because they look awesome and so very rich. Ripple folds also are a favorite in urban homes because they stack so well and allow more “view exposure,” which is especially important in high-rise condominiums where the view is sacred!

In the suburbs, however, most clients like a bit more decorative flair in their panels (at least this has been my observation), although some clients do request simplicity to complement their “clean look” design style.

Horizontal banding in one or more contrasting colors can be fun, as are buttons, unusual pleating, decorative hardware, and “breaking” on the floor, which is very trendy at the moment and preferred by many clients. One reason for the popularity of panels that break on the floor is because it’s frequently seen on television programs, such as HGTV, and in home décor magazine.

Living room

The variety of beautiful fabrics available in the market today is astonishing. Fabrics with shiny stones, sparkles, modern embroidery, and shimmery elements are all very popular. And all kinds of textures can be woven into the fabric, which makes them special and unique!

The use of short rods on each side of the window is growing in popularity, and panels are even sometimes mounted on boards instead of on rods.

Dressing up windows with panels enhances the height of the space and gives it a finished look. Consider some of these fun drapery panel projects I have recently completed and give me a call with ideas of how YOU would like to dress up YOUR windows!

New trends in design 2014

New trends in design 2014!
The home decorating industry it gets influenced by the fashion industry. What you see in the fashion world as far as trends, colors and styles get adapted in the home furnishing and interior design world.

As an example:

1) we see freedom in decorating, more of an eclectic style and the trend of mixing rather than matching. Mixing of different types of woods, mix of rustic styles with ultra-modern ones.
Example using woven wood shades with silk panels.

2) The use of motorized shades and window covering. Especially windows that are high, windows that are hard to reach (over a bath tub, or over the sink in the kitchen). Also motorization is used for child and pet safety. Motorization is becoming very affordable and really easy to program and use. We carry many brands Like Hunter Douglas, Graber, Comfortex, and recently we added Serena shades by Lutron that is an excellent brand and very affordable. Take a look at the video below:

3) The use of heavy draperies is out, now we see stationary side panels, sheers over silk or velvet instead of the sheers being under the heavy draperies. Creating the hotel look in master bedrooms by using room darkening materials as the first layer the sheer draperies as a second layer.

Here Is an example:

4) New ways to use embellishments and very unique trims, braids and tassels.

5) colors with gray undertones, especially in neutrals and strong pop of colors that are clear tones as accents.

6)We see fabrics with birds motif:

 7) The Chevron Motif:

Woven woods are made from grasses, reeds and bamboo, therefore they are considered a green approach to dress a window.

Woven wood window covering they look wonderful in a casual setting as well as in a formal room. To combine them with silk draperies for example, they can look fabulous and provide the element of surprise or the unexpected!

Draperies for you home!

There are so many drapery styles you can select from for your home! There are many things you need to consider while planning your drapery design:

  • Your personal style, whether it is Traditional,Contemporary, Modern,Mediterranean or any other style. Also whether you like full length panels, valances, shades, or blinds.
  • Light control, and if you like to allow more or less light in! Generally people are concerned about their furniture and flooring from the damaging UV rays.
  • Privacy such as in the bedrooms, or perhaps less of it when your window opens to a beautiful view and you do not want to block it.
  • Your window limitation, for example, do we have enough room to have blinds to mount inside the window, do we have room to install a valance or a rod above the window?
  • The architecture of the room, and the shape of the window it self, is the window arched? What type of trim does it have? Is it tall or does it have a transom?

Your draperies, are they ordinary or extraordinary? That’s what I would like to ask residence of Clarendon Hills!

How would you describe your draperies: out of the bag and ordinary or one of a kind and extraordinary?

Ask yourself that question but please do not confuse simplicity with ordinary. Simplicity can be elegant and tasteful; ordinary is what you see everywhere:  overplayed, overdone, and just not exciting.

People are different. They have different needs, lifestyles, personalities, and tastes. Home décor should reflect this, as well as the house’s own appearance and character. Let’s take window treatments for example—your curtain work has to compliment the window itself, from its shape, and, of course, the room in general.

Often, I visit homes with store bought draperies that take away from the integrity of the room. To be quite honest, a room will look better with a naked window than a wrongly dressed one.

Custom window coverings can be simple, affordable, and expressive! Choosing the right combination of fabric and hardware really takes a room to the next level of sophistication. It can also bring comfort and satisfaction to the home owner. We want you to feel good about your personal space!

I cannot stress how important it is for you to be happy and joyful every time you come home. This is my goal as a designer: I strive to assist you in creating a uniquely beautiful home that is totally you!

Here at Gailani Designs, we pride our selves by providing our clients with unique designs, exceptional service, and stay within a budget that  we discuss early on in the design process!
