The power of pillows!

During the course of an interior design project, when it is time to consider pillows, there is often no money left in the budget and the pillow project is canceled.

This is an unfortunate occurrence.

Pillows are important elements in establishing the “feel” and “comfort” of a home. Personally, when I enter a room and the sofa has a bunch of pillows, I feel welcomed. Sometimes, I am amused or impressed with the creativity expressed by the homeowner. Other times, I see pillows playing a special role from a design and esthetics standpoint. Pillows can also be primarily functional, providing support or making a sofa more comfortable.

Adding a pillow or two to a chair can help the room achieve balance. Pillows can also add the element of rhythm. Having a row of pillows, in the same size and color, will draw the eye to the display and create a sense of order, allowing the eye to feel comfortable looking at the larger space. By creating a focal point or by adding an accent color, pillows can effectively complete a room.

As far as function, pillows are helpful on a chair or sofa with a deep seat. A bunch of pillows in various colors and patterns will add not only a splash of color or textural depth, but will also provide the comfort one needs to sit for extended periods.

And consider this: large pillows with dense stuffing can provide extra seating, when, for example, there is not enough furniture for the number of guests at a party or family gathering. (The Ottomans Turks used pillows for this function – and so do many of my clients. When not in use, they can be artfully stacked in a corner.)

Pillows can dress any bed and can complement other fabrics in the bedroom with a variety of awesome colors and textures. How about outdoor living furniture? Or dining room chairs? Be creative about using pillows to add depth and texture to a room, especially when they work with the color scheme of the table during a special holiday, birthday or anniversary celebrations.

Pillows can be so fabulous that they should be considered works of art! Create your own special piece of art by designing an unusually shaped pillow or by using special textiles, opulent trims, and unique bells and whistles. A whole wide world of wonderful pillow options awaits you!

Guest Rooms

Guest rooms! What can they tell about your hospitality?

Making a space welcoming and hospitable is the goal when designing guest rooms. Whether designing a guest room in a large suburban space or in a compact city dwelling, each has its own challenges. With careful planning and creativity, guest rooms will be an expression of the host’s style, hospitality and thoughtfulness.

Here are some tips and ideas when designing a guest room:

  • Consider adding a layer of down to cover the bed for extra comfort; a comfortable bed is a must!
  • Vary the pillows from soft to extra firm and let the guests decide what is more comfortable for them.
  • Buy soft, smooth bed sheets. Egyptian cotton with a high thread count is recommended. How about adding fresh cotton fragrance when storing the linens? (But before doing so, be sure to ask if your guest has any allergies.)
  • Add upholstery to add personality. Upholstered headboards, pillow shams, Euro shams, decorative pillows, bed skirts, and canopies tell so much about the host.
  • Put a vase of fresh flowers on the bedside table. Flowers are another way to tell the guest they are important and are welcome in the home. Again, be sure your guests don’t have allergies. If they do, silk flowers of high quality can be used and will fool anyone into thinking they’re fresh.
  • Display a few photos of family members, trips taken or special events. Photos evoke a conversation with guests and discussions of happy times. Another fun idea is to have a wall display with specially chosen words of wisdom. Special quotes can be framed or stenciled on walls.
  • Consider putting a coffee maker or electric kettle in the room with a selection of high-quality teas. Add a silver tray with fine china, various sugars, honey, and a pitcher with glasses for cold water. Doing this ensures that guests can enjoy a fresh cup of coffee or tea early in the morning in their own bedroom without disturbing the hosting family.
  • Incorporate a reading corner with a comfortable chaise or chair, a soft comfy shawl, and a stack of well read books.
  • Pay attention to details and add those extraordinary trims, buttons, tassels, and fringes. Those details say something special about the host and make guests feel special.

All the careful planning will bring a smile to guests’ faces and will give them a wonderful experience in your guest room that they will never forget.

Custom pillows can set the ambiance to any room!

Pillows

Pillows are an affordable accessory for any room. They can be functional, to make a seat more comfortable, or decorative to add an accent color, texture or just to make a statement. As far as cost, they can be inexpensive if they are ready made. Searching the stores, one can find beautiful pillows imported from India or China for as little as $25.00 a piece. Custom pillows however are a different story. Custom pillows can become very pricy based on the fabrics, trims, the type of insert, and all the bells and whistles that are added.

It might seem expensive to spend money on pillows, but the truth is, the quality, the personal touch, the creativity that goes into custom pillows is priceless. One pillow can set the entire ambiance of a room, and will bring pleasures for many years to come.

I am including pictures to give you an idea of what you can do with pillows in your space. Some are actual projects, and some are illustrations from Jackie Von Tobel book, The Design Directory of Bedding.
