To Line or not to line!

Now a days, not to line custom draperies is unheard of! The only time I would not line is when providing cubical curtains for a medical building. The question is what type of lining to use? The selections are several, and vary from very inexpensive to top of the line blends of cotton and poly. There are several choices of colors and of course room darkening or black out linings.

How about interlining? Interlining is the material that is inserted between the face fabric and the lining. It is widely used in Europe and I made it a standard to use in my drapery designs.

Interlining gives an opulent rich feel to the drapery, adds volume, and helps dress up the draperies.

Interlining also protects against the weather elements such as the damaging rays of the sun and the heat that the it generates. It prevents the patterns in the fabrics from bleeding through, especially when using a contrast fabric in cascades and jabots, and i helps to make the true color of the fabric show and not get faded out from the sun light outside during the day hours. Interlining is great for providing extra insulation, especially when the draperies are drawn a cross the window for total coverage.

Using interlining will create an ambiance of elegance, beauty, and the royal feel that you will not see in the average home.

The room of the month!

An  Installation took place last week in Burr Ridge IL. The room was medium sized and well lit, however the furniture was a little over sized and too many pieces were used. That made the room seem even smaller.  Here is how the windows were dressed to help the room appear bigger, and more spacious: the walls were painted in a warm, light taupe, and the treatment was kept simple. We raised the panels as far as possible, keeping the proportions in mind, and the color of the drapery fabric was the same color as the walls, lowering the contrast. Both of these things delude the eyes into thinking the room is larger than it is.

The client expressed interest in ripple fold draperies in place of sheers and blinds for privacy, and she wanted to create the feel of a five star hotel. I believe, she got it!

Do you like this commercial drapery project?

Commercial spaces can look stunning too! Unfortunately, windows in commercial areas, like offices, are neglected. The common use is adding blinds, solar screens, and old fashioned vertical blinds. Draperies can add beauty and create a very special feel to any room, commercials or residential.

Mix, Match, and create an amazing look with the help of a designer!

Reflecting back on the past 20 years that I have been in business, the one thing I am most proud of is my ability to listen to clients, and observe their style and how they like to live. Keeping all that in mind, as well as the space and existing furnishings, I put together a design that is a reflection of who the client is, coupled with my design expertise.

You might have a hidden treasure right at home, and not know it!

When my client from Naperville, IL (Dupage county) called me to redo her living and dinning areas, I was excited, motivated, and pumped up with energy!

I arrived to her place, a beautiful home with large windows, lots of sun and space, we sat down to discuss her needs and her vision of what she wanted the spaces to look like when we finish the project.

She wanted roman shades with stationary side panels for the windows, fresh paint, a new sofa, a rug, the reupholstering of two chairs and accessories!

When we talked about budget, we came up with a plan! We can do it in stages, and we can save by going on a treasure hunt right at her own home! You will be surprised at how many items you can find that can be reused, refurbished, and with a magical new face lift can be transformed into a brand new piece. I was especially excited to see a curio cabinet over stuffed with items. These very special items can be used as accessories here and there, which means reduction in our unnecessary spending on decorative items. The main budget can be used on the windows and new a couch.

A collection of china cups and saucers were buried under other items and they were well hidden in the curio cabinet! A flow of ideas came to my mind: why can’t we use them as our decorative items around the two rooms? My client welcomed the idea, and I had my wonderful handyman make me tiny shelves, then paint them, hang them on the wall in a special composition to have balance, and voila! The new look was fresh, unique, and economical!

Tie backs can make a huge statment!

Every element in the drapery’s design is important and it can make a definite contribution to the over all look of the draperies.

Take for example the tie back: a simple drapery panel can be turned into a magnificent one by adding a special tassel tie back or a decorative embellished one.

Tie backs could be made from natural materials, such as raffia, dried flowers, tree barks, ceramic beads, and materials of similar nature for that special look that one might desire.

Pleated fabrics, ruffled fabrics, trims, fringes, pleats, buttons, grommets, bows, and ribbons, to name few ideas can be added to the tie back to make them unique!

Lets look at the slide show below of some designs from my portfolio to get few ideas!

How to be creative with your Valances!

In my opinion what makes a valance, or any window treatment is the bells and whistles you add. When I say bells and whistles, it is not necessarily has to have fringes, trims, and embellishments, it could be adding an unusual pleat, buttons, contrast cording, grommets or the way you lay your fabric. Cutting your fabric on the bias, especially if the fabric has a special design, such as checks, or a geometrical pattern effects the look of the valence. How about alternating the pattern, perhaps having the face of the valance be normally cut and inserting the pleat that has been cut on the bias?  Take a look at the pictures below.
