Scary Windows will not scare us!

October is the season of cold weather, vibrant colors, apple orchards, pumpkin picking, and Halloween! While your children are dressing up in fun and scary costumes, take some extra time this month to dress up the scary windows in your home.

I’m talking about those difficult, large or odd-shaped windows that don’t have an easy fix when it comes to shades and blinds. Don’t let corner, bow, bay, octagon, arched, trapezoid, or high windows trouble you! There is an effective and affordable way to dress every single kind of window and we are not afraid to take up any window challenges you may have for us!

The window treatment you choose for your more elaborate décor projects should accentuate the natural beauty of that window and its view. You don’t want to hide the architectural details of the window’s design. Work with the shape, don’t hide it!

Here are some tips to wake you up from your window nightmares and get you closer to the home of your dreams:

1) Hard-to-reach windows don’t necessarily need to be dressed since they are usually too high to impede on your privacy. If there are light control issues, i.e. if the sun hits too harshly, look into motorization!

2) Skylights are beautiful assets to any room, but they need to be covered to prevent any harmful rays from destroying your furniture. Again, adjustable shades are ideal here. Look into remote-controlled shades, or simple cellular shades that can be opened and closed with a long wand.

3) Most shutters and blinds can be made to fit any irregularly shaped window. Just call in an expert if you aren’t sure of what to do. We are readily available to help you find a solution that suits you!

Guest Rooms! What can they tell about your hospitality?

Guest Rooms

Making a room welcoming and hospitable is the goal when designing guest rooms. Whether designing a guest room in a large suburban space, or in a compact city dwelling, each has its own challenges. With careful planning and creativity, guest rooms will be an expression of the host’s style, hospitality and thoughtfulness.

Here are some tips and ideas when designing a guest room:

  • A comfortable bed is a must; consider an extra layer of down to cover the bed for extra comfort.
  •  Vary the pillows from soft to extra firm and let the guests decide what is more comfortable for them.
  • The bed sheets must be soft. Egyptian cotton with a high thread count is recommended. How about adding fresh cotton fragrance when storing the linens? But be sure to ask if your guest has any allergies.
  • Upholstered head boards, pillow shams, Euro shams, decorative pillows, bed skirts, and canopies are all items that tell so much about the host.
  • Fresh flowers are another way to tell the guest they are important, and they are very much cared about! Again, be sure your guests don’t have allergies. If they do, silk flowers of high quality can be used and will fool anyone into thinking they’re fresh.
  • Displaying family pictures, trips, or special events will evoke conversation and discussion of happy times with guests. Another good idea is to have a wall display with words of wisdom. Special quotes framed or stenciled on walls is something to consider.
  • Try putting a coffee maker or electric kettle in the room with a selection of high quality teas. Add a silver tray with fine china, various sugars, honey, and a pitcher with glasses for cold water. Guests could enjoy a fresh cup of coffee or tea early in the morning in their own bed room without disturbing the hosting family.
  • Incorporate a reading corner with a comfortable chaise or chair, a soft comfy shawl, and a stack of well read books.
  • Pay attention to details and add those extra ordinary trims, buttons, tassels, and fringes. Those details say something special about the host.

All the careful planning will bring a smile to guests’ faces, and will give them a wonderful experience they will never forget.

Trimmings to add a sense of drama!

Trimmings, or as the French call them “Passementerie”, is a term used for the decorative finishing added to the edges of draperies, pillows, lamp shades, bedding, and furniture. Trims such as bullion fringe, cords, tapes, gimps ….etc are usually added for drama and to provide a unique custom look, or it can be simply added for function, such as hiding an unsightly seam, or joining two different fabrics. Whether it is added for function or for a decorative purpose, trims always bring beauty and style to any room. There are thousands of choices out in the world of decorating; some are imported as well as U.S made. Some have the formal feel like the ones made out of silk. Others might be less formal that are made of cotton. A perfect match of colors can be achieved by ordering a custom dye for a custom fringe if the budget allows it. It is always a good idea to explore the different possibilities for creating that one-of-a-kind look that is expressive and reflects a personal flair.

Batiks, stunning designs that add beauty to your home!

Batiks are made by using a wax resistant dye technique originated in java. Normally the fabrics are cottons or silks that are painted or stamped with melted wax. The fabric is immersed in a dye bath and the waxed area resist the dye. The wax then is removed by applying heat. Batiks have that Eastern feel and will work beautifully with bamboo and rattan furniture and will make gorgeous window treatment combined with woven shades. Some batiks are thin enough to be used as sheers, and some times it can be lined and used as drapery panels. Generally batiks are not strong enough for upholstery use.

We carry fabrics of all types and suitable for all styles and applications, for more information call(630)420-0800.

Black out lining has more benefits than letting you sleep in!

I had a great learning experience two weeks ago. I got a call from my work room, and my seamstress asked me to stop by the shop to check out the fabric she has received for one of my client’s orders. When I arrived she showed me the beautiful embroidered silk from RM COCO. She pointed out to me that when we hold the fabric to the window even with lining and interlining, we will still see the needle holes from the embroidery, and the color of the fabric will look faded from the sun hitting the window all morning long. Black out lining is the better solution. I called the client, asked permission to make the change, got the OK, and WOW, what an amazing window treatment!

We learn something new everyday, and we pass it on to our clients, who appreciate all the care and details that goes into their design project!
